Sardar Vallabhai Patel, popularly known as “Iron Man of India”, has played a major role in India’s freedom struggle. Vallabhai Patel was the first deputy prime minister and home minister of Independent India.
Early Life
Sardar Vallabhai Patel was born on 31st October 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. His parents were Zaverbhai and Ladbai. In 1897, he was matriculated from Nadiad High School and started preparing for law examination. In 1891, He married to Jhaverba and they had two children. His wife passed away in 1909. Later in 1910, Sardar Patel went to England for higher studies in Law. After successfully completing his studies he came back to India in 1913 and started law practice in Ahemedabad. During this time, he was got influenced by Gandhiji’s words and philosophy.
Political Career
In 1917, Sardar Patel was elected as the secretary of Gujarat Sabha. He got the first opportunity to serve public life in the event of Kaira flood in 1918. In the revolt of Kaira he guided the farmers and organize the “Non Tax campaign” on Gandhian, satyagraha lines. It became successful and the British government returned the seized lands to farmers. In 1928, farmers at Bardoli had faced the same problem and Vallabhai Patel successfully resolved the problems of farmers. The Bardoli satyagraha created an powerful excitement across India and impressed by his efforts Gandhiji gave him the title of “sardar”.
Sardar Patel took part in Salt Satyagraha in 1930, and he was imprisoned for the first time. After the famous Gandi-Irvin pact in 1931, Sardar was released. In 1931 Karachi session of Congress, Sardar Patel was elected as president. He was again imprisoned with Gandhiji in 1932, after the failure of second round table conference. He was released in 1934. During the time of quit India movement 1942, British government jailed many leaders including Sardar Patel and all were released after three years.
Role in Independent India
After Indian Independence on 1947, Sardar Vallabhai Patel appointed as deputy Prime Minister and also had the charges of home affairs, information and broadcasting. Sardar Patel successfully completed the integration of princely states into Indian Union. With great political foresight and intelligence, his untiring efforts bring a united country. Regarding his achievements he was renowned as “Iron Man”. Sardar Vallabhai Patel died on 15th December 1950. He was conferred Bharat Ratna in 1991.
