Mahatma Gandhi Setu Longest River Bridge India


Mahatma Gandhi Setu is the longest river bridge in India and one of the longest bridges in the world. Build over the river Ganges, Mahatma Gandhi Setu Bridge connects Hajipur in north to Patna in the south. The bridge covers a total length of 5.575 km (5,575 metres or 18,291 ft). The bridge was inaugurated in May 1982 by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. 

Mahatma Gandhi Setu is also known as Ganga Setu and is part of National Highway 19 (NH 19). The bridge was built by Gammon India Limited, one of the largest civil engineering construction companies in India. There are 48 pilers to this bridge.

Patna is the capital of Bihar state and is only 10 km from Hajipur. Ancient Patna was the capital of the Magadha Empire, which is then known by the Pataliputra.
