India Science Award, also referred as Indian Science Award, India’s highest science award instituted by the Union government under the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Introduced in 2004, India Science Award price carries a Gold Medal, a citation and a cash prize of Rs 25 lakhs. Being India’s top science honour, the award the presented to those scientists for their outstanding contribution toward science - in any of the fields including engineering, medicine, and/or agriculture.
The first India Science Award was awarded in to 2004 to Indian chemist C.N.R. Rao by the then Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee. The India Science Award 2010 was awarded to eminent statistician C.R. Rao by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the 97th Indian Science Congress held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala from 3rd to 7th January 2010. C.R. Rao or Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao is an Indian statistician and Padma Bhushan award winner who was born in Hadagali, in Bellary district or Karnataka.
