Sooranad Kunjan Pillai is the first recipient of Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. The award is the highest literary honour given by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Government of Kerala. Ezhuthachan Award was instituted in 1993.
Sooranad Kunjan Pillai was an eminent writer, historian, socio-cultural leader, essayist and researcher. He was awarded Padmashri in 1984. Some of the major works of Sooranad Kunjan Pillai include Kalyana Sowdam, Ratnasamragyam, Malabar in the Eyes of Travellers, Kairali Samaksham, Hridayarpanam, Thiruvuthankoorile Mahanmar, Thiruvuthankoor - Kochi Charithra Kathakal and Hridayaramam.
