Dronacharya Award, named after Drona - the royal guru of Arjuna of Mahabharata, is an annual award presented by Indian Government for excellence in sports coaching. Instituted in 1985, Dronacharya Award consists of a bronze statuette of Dronacharya and a cash prize of Rs. 5, 00, 000. The name Dronacharya award was considered appropriate as the best sportsperson award is named Arjuna Award, and hence the best coaching award be named after Guru Dronacharya.
The first recipients of Dronacharya Award in 1985 were O.M. Nambiar for Athletics, Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat for Wrestling, and Om Prakash Bhardwaj for Boxing.
The 2012 Dronacharya Award was issued to various sports persons and coaches for their contribution in the field of sports. Shri B.I. Fernadez is the First Foreign Coach who was awarded by Dronacharya Award in 2012.
