The Nobel Prizes, instituted in 1901, are the international awards established according to the will of the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel. Currently there are 8 Indian who have won the Nobel Prize awards – the first being Rabindranath Tagore in 1913 and the last being Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Venki Ramakrishnan) in 2009. Rabindranath Tagore - Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 


Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to be honoured with the Nobel Prize. Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for his most famous composition “Gitanjali”.  Rabindranath Tagore, also known as Gurudev or Bhanu Shingho, was born in Calcutta. Rabindranath Tagore is the composer of the Indian national anthem Jana Gana Mana, and Amar Shonar Bangla, the Bangladeshi national anthem. 

C. V. Raman – Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 


CV Raman or Sir Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman is the first Indian scientist to win the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930. C.V Raman was awarded Nobel Prize for his discovery of “Raman effect” or “Raman scattering”. Sir Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman was born in Thiruvanaikkaval, in the Trichy district of Tamilnadu.

Dr. Hargobind Khorana – Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 1968

Dr. Har Gobind Khorana or Hargobind Khorana was the first Indian to win Nobel Prize for Medicine or Nobel Prize for Physiology in 1968. Dr. Har Gobind Khorana shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1968 with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley for interpreting the genetic code and studying its function in protein synthesis. 

Mother Teresa - Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979

Mother Teresa was the first Indian to win Nobel Peace for Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa is the only Indian to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun of Albanian (today’s Skopje, Republic of Macedonia). Mother Teresa was a world famous Humanitarian who adopted the Indian citizenship. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 at Calcutta (Kolkata), India.

Dr. Subramanyan Chandrasekhar – Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983

Dr. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was an Indian-born American astrophysicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born on 19th October 1910 in a Tamil Hindu family at Lahore in India (Lahore is now a part of Pakistan). Dr. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar shared the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics with American astrophysicist Wilfred Alfred Fowler.  Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was the nephew of 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics laureate Sir C. V. Raman.

Dr. Amartya Sen – Nobel Prize for Economics in 1998

Dr. Amartya Sen is a world famous Indian economist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1998 for his contributions to welfare economics. Amartya Sen was born in 1933 at Santiniketan, a small town near Bolpur, in West Bengal, India.  
  • Dr. Amartya Sen was awarded India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 1999.

V.S. Naipaul – Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001

V.S. Naipaul, also known as Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul and Sir Vidia Naipaul, is the Nobel Prize for Literature winner in 2001. V.S. Naipaul is a Trinidadian writer born in 1932 to parents of Indian descent. Sir Vidia Naipaul is a master of modern English prose and is well known for his extensive works in English Literature.

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan – Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, also known as Venki Ramakrishnan, is an Indian-born American structural biologist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009. Ramakrishnan was born at Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu in 1952. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath for their studies of the structure and function of the ribosome.

Vallathol Award is instituted by Vallathol Sahithya Samithi in memory of Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon. The award, one of the main Malayalam Literary Awards, is given to the Malayalam writers for his contribution to the language. Vallathol Puraskaram includes a memento and the prize money amount of Rs 1, 11, 111. The first winner of Vallathol Award was Mahakavi Pala Narayanan Nair in 1991 and the recent winner of Vallathol Award 2010 was renowned poet and writer Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri.

JC Daniel Award is a part of the annual Kerala State Film Awards, awarded for the lifetime achievements and contributions to Malayalam film industry. JC Daniel Award is instituted in memory of the father of Malayalam Cinema - Sri J. C. Daniel. The award was instituted in 1992 by Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala and the first winner of J.C Daniel Award was T.E Vasudevan, legendary Malayalam movie producer who produced hit movies like ‘Nair Pidicha Pulivaal’. And the recent winner of J.C. Daniel Award 2010 is Navodaya Appachan.

List of Dronacharya Award 2012 Winners. The prestigious coaching award is presented annually for the excellence in sports coaching. Cuban Coach BI Fernandez became the First Foreign Coach who was awarded the Dronacharya Award in 2012. The award carries a bronze statuette of Dronacharya along with a cash prize of Rs 5 Lakh.

Dronacharya Award, named after Drona - the royal guru of Arjuna of Mahabharata, is an annual award presented by Indian Government for excellence in sports coaching. Instituted in 1985, Dronacharya Award consists of a bronze statuette of Dronacharya and a cash prize of Rs. 5, 00, 000. The name Dronacharya award was considered appropriate as the best sportsperson award is named Arjuna Award, and hence the best coaching award be named after Guru Dronacharya.

The first recipients of Dronacharya Award in 1985 were O.M. Nambiar for Athletics, Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat for Wrestling, and Om Prakash Bhardwaj for Boxing. 

The 2012 Dronacharya Award was issued to various sports persons and coaches for their contribution in the field of sports. Shri B.I. Fernadez is the First Foreign Coach who was awarded by Dronacharya Award in 2012.

The Nobel Prize for Literature 2012 was won by Mo Yan. Mo Yan is the pen name of writer Guan Moye. He is a Chinese novelist and short story writer. Some of the notable works of Mo Yan include Red Sorghum Clan, The Republic of Wine, and Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2012 was awarded to Mo Yan for his work as a writer "who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary".

List of Bharat Ratna Posthumous Award Winners. Till now, India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna has been awarded to twelve civilians posthumously. Bharat Ratna Posthumous Award Winners

Dadasaheb Phalke Award or Dada Sahib Phalke Award is the most prestigious award in the Indian Film Industry, given by Government of India for the lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema. The award is instituted to honor Dada Saheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, for his invaluable contribution to Indian film medium. Dada Saheb Phalke award was introduced in 1969, the birth centenary year of Dadasaheb Phalke, by the Government of India as annual National Awards. Dadasahib Phalke award is given in a particular year along with National Film Awards and the award consists of a cash prize of 10 lakh, a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, and a shawl.

About Dadasaheb Phalke

Dadasaheb Phalke (Dhundiraj Govind Phalke), popularly known as the father of Indian Cinema, was born in 1870, April 30. His debut film Raja Harishchandra was the first full-length feature film in India. Raja Harishchandra movie released in 1912 effectively marked the art of film-making in India. By respecting his innovative zeal and persistent efforts, Government of India established Dadasaheb Phalke award to honor the veterans in Indian film industry.

Actress Devika Rani Roerich is the first recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke award in the year 1969. Film producer B. N. Sircar was the second recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1970. The award was posthumously given to actor Prithviraj Kapoor in the year 1971. Lata Mangeshkar, the famous playback singer, received Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1989. Winner of Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2008 was cinematographer V. K. Murthy. The filmmaker D. Ramanaidu has been selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2009.
