How to prepare for UPSC exams


The Union Public Service Commission has been established under Article 315 of the Constitution of India. The Commission consists of a Chairman and nine Members. Civil Services Examination is the most prestigious examination conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for recruitment to various All India Services including I.A.S., I.P.S., I.F.S., I.R.S., and various Group A Services and Group B Services.

The UPSC have been entrusted with the following duties and role under the Constitution:

Recruitment to services & posts under the Union through conduct of competitive examinations;
Recruitment to services & posts under the Central Government by Selection through Interviews;
Advising on the suitability of officers for appointment on promotion as well as transfer-on-deputation;
Advising the Government on all matters relating to methods of Recruitment to various services and posts;
Disciplinary cases relating to different civil services; and Miscellaneous matters relating to grant of extra ordinary pensions, reimbursement of legal expenses etc.

The UPSC Examination consists of three stages.

Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Objective Type) (Usually conducted in May)
Civil Services Main Examination (Written) (Conducted during October/November)
Interview and final Selection (During April/May)

UPSC exam preparation needs thorough planning. Candidate can not achieve success until he organizes his study matter, make proper time management and get guidance from professors and experts.

1. For improving rank in UPSC, one must have to gain mental power through clear understanding of concepts and all necessary details. It can be enhanced by setting up a steady study timetable, regularly reading all of the allocated topics cautiously, developing an approach to practice for tests.


2. The first and foremost thing to decide while aspiring for Civil Services is the judicious choice of subjects for the Preliminary and the Mains examinations. The selection of subjects should be done most carefully, if it goes wrong, everything will go wrong.

3. Candidate must have to be detached from many activities. The candidate should have a strong target in mind of getting through the UPSC exam.

4. The candidate must practice each day according to the well planned time table. Important formulas and notes have to be taken in a separate paper so that the candidate can refer it easily before getting into the exam hall. The candidate should understand ones weak and strong areas and prepare accordingly.

5. Learning wrong concepts will put them in great trouble. Always take professional’s advice and plan to study as per convenience.

6. Studying same topic for a longer period is often uninteresting. Student must change the content of study time to time to involve deeply in study. When he feels fatigue, he may get relaxed by talking to family members. This will boost enthusiasm for studies and then he will study more seriously and grasp all concepts.

7. Students often confused with range of topics and question styles. They buy question paper and start to solve questions.

8. Having correct and genuine knowledge will help student to solve difficult questions in examination speedily. When student attempts to question test paper with confidence, his mind works very fast and he concentrates more on question, thinks from various angles to choose correct alternative and mark the correct answer.

9. Read at least one national newspapers regularly, Watch on TV news regularly.

10. Though prescribed syllabus is comparatively not that vast, but still it requires systematic preparation. For the General English Paper, candidates can practice and revise the basic rules of English grammar and vocabulary, from any standard grammar/Civil Services examination handbook.
