How to improve spoken English


Good English speaking skills are required in every aspect of our lives. We all know that English is the language that unifies the world, as it is the language known to maximum number of individuals around the globe. Good Spoken English is so important, but still very few people possess this skill. There are multiple reasons for issues with communication skills in English.

Tips for improving spoken English:

1. Before you start with English language, first get comfortable with the language. Read for 20 minutes in English. It can be a newspaper, a short story, a poem, or even a novel.

2. Confidence is something that comes by practice. Try to speak with confidence in English. It conveys the idea that you are very much familiar with the topic and can converse easily on it.

3. A good vocabulary helps the speaker to use multiple words for conveying the same message. Also it helps to understand what the other person is speaking, and we are able to respond to it properly.

4. Dictionary is your best companion, always keep one in your pocket. Whenever you encounter any new word, just make a note of it. Moreover the dictionary contains the phonemes before the meaning of the word. These phonemes are the way to pronounce the word correctly. This will help in getting the right pronunciation as well as meaning of words. It is an immense boost to your vocabulary also.

5. Try to learn English to speak clearly and concisely.

6. Get over any fear you might have of making mistakes. You will make mistakes. Learning any language can be frustrating, be patient with yourself, because frustration won’t help you, so let it go.

7. Talking to yourself is one of the most effective way of improving spoken English. First you do not need any one to talk, so no issues of anyone laughing at your mistakes. Second you can practice at any time as per your comfort and you start to think in English. When we think in English, then we are able to communicate better since we need not translate it to our native languages every-time.

8. Take every opportunity you have to speak with people in English. Talk to friends who are also learning English. When you are watching television observe the mouth movements of those who speak English well and try to imitate them. Repeat what they are saying, while imitating the intonation and rhythm of their speech.

9. Record your own voice and listen for pronunciation mistakes. Many people hate to hear the sound of their voice and avoid listening to themselves speak. However, this is a very important exercise because doing it will help you become conscious of the mistakes you are making.

10. Be attentive how English-speaking people hold conversations. Listen to the words they use, the intonation, how they express their thoughts through the language, and the common expressions they make. Keep a small notebook with you and write down words and phrases you heard so you can recall them and practice speaking them later.

11. Construct English sentences in your mind and practice speaking them silently at first, then orally. The best place to do this is in front of the mirror. Listen to how you say the words and correct yourself for any mistakes.

12. In a communication, we need to interact equally with others. To converse properly we need to understand what the others are saying, and then respond to them. But if we have poor vocabulary, or are unable to understand what others are saying, then there is no way by which we can respond to them correctly.

13. Using same words again and again makes the listener think that you don’t have a good vocabulary and that you are not good in spoken skills. Try to vary words among sentences. This helps to keep the listener involved and interested.

14. If you want to be a good speaker then listening is very important. Speaking slowly gives the listener time to understand what you have said. Speaking slowly gives you time to think over your own words. You get extra time to properly rephrase your sentence so as to make the best impact. The choice of words is usually much better when we speak slowly.
