The Silent Valley National Park, also known locally as known as Sairandhrivanam, is located in the Nilgiri Hills, in Palakkad district of Kerala, India. Silent Valley Park is well-known as a unique, natural tropical evergreen rainforest region and consists of a valuable biodiversity resource. Silent Valley is declared as a National Park in 1980 and it is core of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Old name of Silent Valley is “Sairandri Vanam”. The first known historic explorer of Silent Valley National Park was Robert Wight - a Botanist in 1847.
With an area of 237.52 sq km, Silent Valley National Park is situated in the Kundali Hills, in the Western Ghats in Kerala. This park is considered as one of the few remaining pristine natural forest areas in India. The name “Silent Valley” attributed to absence of Cicadas – as the clamor of Cicadas heard anywhere in this region. The major river here is Kuntipuzha River or Kunthi River, a crystal clear perennial river the passes through the western side of the park and merges to Bharathapuzha. Along with exceptional species diversity, Silent Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is a valuable reserve of medicinal plants and herbs.
Wildlife in Silent Valley National Park
Silent Valley National Park has a wide range of amazing flora and fauna. The park is known for significant population of Lion Tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Langur, the most endangered primates in India. Different types of mammals found here include: Bonnet Macaque, Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Cat, The small Indian Civet, Ruddy Mongoose, Sloth Bear, Common Otter, Indian Elephant and Nilgiri Tahr. Identified as one of the important bird areas of India, Silent Valley National Park consist many species of birds including Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Bluewinged Parakect, Crimsonthroated Barbet, Black and Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Flycatcher and more. In addition, the fauna of the valley include many varieties of reptiles, ambhibians, butterflies and moths. Flora of Silent Valley includes about 1000 species of plants including endangered orchid species and other flowering plants.

Silent Valley National Park is situated 40 km north-west of Mannarkkad in Palakkad District of Kerala. Sairandhri is the entrance point and visitors center for Silent Valley. The base camp of the National Park, Mukkali is 19 km from Mannarkkad town. From East: Palakkad (60 km) and Coimbatore (45 km). From South : Thrissur (115 km) and Shornur (75 km) and From North : Calicut (120 km).
By Flight / Airport
Cochin International Airport in Kerala (135 km) and C A Coimbatore Airport or Coimbatore Peelamedu Airport in Tamil Nadu (55 km) are the nearest airport to reach Silent Valley National Park.
By Train / Railway Station
Palakkad Junction Railway Station at Olavakkode, Palakkad is the nearest railway station to reach Silent Valley National Park. The railway station is around 60 km away from the base camp of the National Park, Mukkali. Shoranur Junction Railway Station (75 km) and Coimbatore Junction Railway Station (55 km) are the next nearest railway stations to reach Silent Valley National Park.
