Micromax Is Now India's Largest Mobile Phone Vendor; Samsung Falls

Micromax is now king of the Indian mobile phone hill, overtaking Korean giant Samsung to become the largest mobile phone vendor in the country. According to a Counterpoint Research report, Micromax controlled 16.6 market share in the April-June quarter this year as opposed to Samsung's 14.4 percent.
The mobile phone market in India grew just 2 percent in the second quarter, with demand for feature phone falling by 16 percent while smartphone sales were up 68 percent. Micromax capitalized on this increase in demand for low-end smartphones, growing its share of the smartphone market to 19 percent.
While Samsung's share of the smartphone market stood at 25.3 percent during Q2, the Indian company's gains were enough to propel it ahead of its Korean rival in the overall mobile phone market. Samsung's share of the smartphone market in Indian is inline with its global smartphone market share for the April-June quarter.

Nokia and Karbonn took the third and fourth spot in the Indian mobile phone market, with a 10.9 percent and a 9.5 percent share respectively. A recent report suggested that Nokia has been relegated to the fifth spot in the smartphone segment, overtaken by new entrant Motorola.
Despite Micromax's rise to the top, the company still has a long way to go to fend off threats from newcomers in the Indian market. Motorola serves as a prime example, registering sales of nearly 1 million units in the second quarter, just six months after marking its re-entry into the Indian market.

Micromax on the other hand is estimated to have sold 3.1 million smartphones in the same period, but the rate of growth of new entrants has been been astounding. With sales of feature phones falling, smartphones are increasingly powering growth of the Indian phone market. If Micromax wants to keep the crown, the company is going to have to ward off threats from manufacturers like Motorola, Xiaomi, Lenovo and Asus.
