Karimeen Green Chromide State Fish of Kerala

Karimeen, also known as Green Chromide or Pearl Spot, is the state fish of Kerala, southern India. Kari Meen is a freshwater fish found throughout Kerala, especially in the Kerala Backwaters of Alappuzha, backwaters of Andhra Pradesh, and in western flowing rivers in Karnataka. The scientific name of Karimeen is “Etroplus Suratensis”. 

The Government of Kerala has declared Karimeen as the State Fish or State aquatic animal on 8th July 2010 and the declared 2010 – 2011 as Karimeen Year to increase fish farming, production and sales.

Earlier in 2008, The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources Lucknow, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, has suggested Karimeen fish as the State Fish of Kerala. 


Karimeen Pollichathu, Karimeen Masala, Karemeen Molly, and Karimeen Fry are some of the important delicious dishes prepared by people all over Kerala, and especially Kuttanad. 

Currently eight states in India have their on state fishes.
