First Railway Line in Kerala 1861 Beypore to Tirur

The first Railway Line in Kerala was started in 12th March 1861. The first Kerala railway line around 30.5 km was built between Beypore and Tirur. The second railway line in Kerala was built from Tirur – Kuttipuram (14.5 km) on 1st May 1861. This was followed by the 105 km Pattambi - Podanur railway line on 14th April 1862 and the 37 km Kuttipuram – Pattambi railway line constructed on 23rd September 1862.

Other major developments of railways in Kerala were the formation of Shoranur - Ernakulam railway line in 1902 and the establishment of the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (TVC) on 4th November 1931. Trivandrum Railway Station became a major hub of railway operations in Kerala. Shoranur - Ernakulam railway line was constructed as a meter gauge line, and was later converted in gauge in 1934. 

During the formation Kerala state on 1st November 1956, the total length of railway line in Kerala was 745 km. At that time Kollam and Ernakulam districts were not connected by train services. The 220 km railway line from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam was completed in 1976.
