Cherrapunji India


Cherrapunji located in the Indian state of Meghalaya is credited as being the second wettest place on Earth. The word “cherrapunji” means ‘land of oranges’. It holds two Guinness world records for receiving the maximum amount of rainfall in a single year and also for receiving the maximum amount of rainfall in a single month. It is the traditional capital of a hima known as Sohra or Churra.

Cherrapunji sits on a plateau in the southern part of the Khasi Hills, facing the plains of Bangladesh. Valleys are covered with diverse vegetation with endemic species of plants. Cherrapunji is also famous for its living bridges. Over hundreds of years the people in Cherrapunji have developed techniques for growing roots of trees into large bridges. The process takes 10–15 years and the bridges typically last hundreds of years.

Cherrapunji lies in the state of Meghalaya which is well connected to all parts of the nation.
By Air

Shillong (Umroi) airport is the nearest to Cherrapunji and the Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati is the nearest International Airport.
There are flights from New Delhi or Kolkata to Guwahati. Flights from Kolkata operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
By Rail
Guwahati is the nearest railhead to Cherrapunji.
By Road
The state transport bus station lies in Paltan Bazaar, near Guwahati Railway Station. There are Assam and Meghalaya state transport buses to Shillong. States buses run frequently between Shillong and Cherrapunji. Apart from this, there are many private luxury coach and tourist taxies with regular services in these routes.
