Abhijnanasakuntalam written by Kalidasa

Abhijnanasakuntalam was written by Kalidasa. Abhijnana Shakuntalam is considered as the masterpiece of Kalidasa's works. The literal meaning of the Sanskrit play Abhijnanasakuntalam is "The Recognition of Sakuntala" or "The Sign of Shakuntala". Abhijnana Sakuntalam tells the story of King Dushyanta who falls in love with Shakuntala the daughter of sage Vishwamitra, while on a hunting trip.

Abhijnanasakuntalam was translated into English by Sir William Jones in 1789. The play was the first Indian drama to be translated into a Western language.

Other importants plays by Kalidas include Malavikagnimitram and Vikramorvasiyam.  Raghuvamsa and Kumarasambhava are the important epic poems by Kalidasa.
