Pune Warriors retreat from the IPL

BCCI saw pullout coming, sources say record bid was unrealistic; auction for new team to be held.

Perhaps, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) saw it coming. Sahara India, owners of Pune Warriors India, withdrawing its team from the IPL was along expected lines, if sources in the BCCI are to be believed.

A senior official in the board told dna soon after news of Sahara pulling out of the IPL broke on Tuesday that in its current financial situation, how could they have paid a huge amount on an annual basis.

“Sahara made the highest bid in the auction for new teams, followed by Kochi Tuskers.

Their amount was almost three times higher than the other teams and it was totally unrealistic. They paid high price, there was no chance of meeting them on an annual basis. Just when other IPL teams pay in the region of Rs60-70 crore per year, Pune Warriors were to pay almost three times more of that. The BCCI saw this kind of a situation coming,” said the official on condition of anonymity.

He also added that the current eight teams in the IPL are on a strong wicket. “We have no problems with the other teams. In fact, the board has to pay the teams more than what it has to recover from them. They have given bank guarantees and we cannot lose them.”

Asked if the BCCI could have helped Sahara in this situation, he said: “What could the board have done? How could it have helped? The board has followed the rules and regulations. Perhaps, the only way possible might have been if the team sponsors came forward to help.”

About the overall situation in IPL including the spot-fixing issues that have tarnished the image of the league, the official said, “In fact, we are getting more stable. What can the board do if a few individuals are involved in such things. We have no control over them. We cannot be policing them all the time. This incident will only help clean up the system.”

The official said that there would be an auction for a new team for next year’s IPL.
