H1N1 toll: 43 deaths in 38 days

CHANDIGARH: The swine flu  toll in the region this year - 43 deaths in 38 days cases -- has left many in jitters in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh  and Chandigarh. The tally of flu positives has risen to 212 since January in the region, which was 131 in 2012. Bewildered by the upsurge, PGI, an apex referral lab of these states, is trying to ascertain the reason behind it.

In 2009, there were 143 confirmed  H1N1 deaths from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal and Chandigarh. Haryana has recorded maximum influenza cases - 94 confirmed, including 23 deaths. Karnal in Haryana has contributed largely with five deaths in a month and 18 H1N1 positives. Haryana state nodal officer Gurbachan Verma said, "This year, we have 94 cases. Karnal and Hisar have 18 and 11 respectively."

With 87 confirmed cases and 17 deaths, Punjab, too, has recorded an upswing. In 2012, there were 13 positives, including 4 deaths, in Punjab. "Due to seasonal variation, we have come across 87 flu positives, which is more than six times the figure last year," said Deepak Bhatia, state nodal officer.

However, in Himachal, cases have dipped from 84 last year to 6 positives this year. One death has been confirmed in Solan. HP state nodal officer Anuradha said, "A death due to H1N1 has been officially recorded. The report of another death is awaited."

Chandigarh had 16 cases last year; this year there have 23 since January.
