Area wise, this District is the biggest district in Andhra Pradesh. The boundaries of Anantapur district are Cuddapah district, Chittoor district and Karnataka State border, Karnataka State and Kurnool district in the East, South, West and North directions respectively. Main rivers are Penna, Chitravathi, Kunderu, Hagari. Tungabhadra Upper Canal is the only source of water for Irrigation. The major source of drinking water is through Handri- Niva Sujala Sravanthi Project. Andhra and Karnataka States Joint Project at Hampi on River Tungabadra fulfill the electricity needs of this district. Some proposals are made for constructing Maddhileru Reservoir on Maddhileru canal at Adavi Brahmanapally. 10% of the area of the district is occupied by forest. It is one of the four districts of Rayalaseema. Main towns are Anantapur, Hindupur, Kadiri, Tadipatri, Dharmavaram, Rayadurg. One of the four Industrial development centers approved by the Government of India is in this district. This district is often affected by drought. The occupations are silk production and agriculture. There are three Universities in the district viz.,Sri Krishna devaraya University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and Sri Satya Sai university. Leather Puppets and Toys are the handicrafts of this district. Rayadurg, Gooty and Penukonda Forts, Bhogasamudram, Timmam Marrimanu, Enumaladhoddi, Alur waterfall and a no. of temples are worth visiting in this district. It is 354 kms from Hyderabad, 213 kms from Bangalore. It is connected to most important cities of the state by Road. Ananthapur railway station is 354 Km from Hyderabad, 288 Km from Tirupati and 213 Km from Bangalore. Ananthapur is 354 Km from Hyderabad and 213 Km away from Bangolore Airport.
