WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is an IP based, wireless broadband access technology. Which provide high-speed Internet access to home and business subscribers, without wires.Wimax technology is based on Standard that is IEEE 802.16, it usually also called as Broadband Wireless Access. It is performance similar to 802.11/Wi-Fi networks with the coverage and QoS (quality of service) of cellular networks. WiMax offers data-transfer rates of up to 75 Mbit/s, which is superior to conventional cable modem and DSL & ADSL connections. However, the bandwidth must be split among multiple users and thus yields lower speeds in practice.
WiMax is two types fixed WiMax and Mobile WiMax.In fixed wimax there is Base stations (BS) and subscriber stations (SS) which supporting high throughput in NLOS environments. Mobile WiMax (Wimax backhaul) is actually a connection system from the Access Point (AP) back to the provider and to the connection from the provider to the network.
Depending upon its version data speed and bandwidth are listed as:
WiMax-802.16.1 (10-66 GHz, line-of-sight, up to 134Mbit/s)
WiMax-802.16.2 (minimizing interference between coexisting WMANs)
WiMax-802.16a (2-11 GHz, Mesh, non-line-of-sight)
WiMax-802.16b (5-6 GHz)
WiMax-802.16c (detailed system profiles)
WiMax-802.16e (Mobile Wireless MAN)
How WiMax Works
WiMax can provide two forms of wireless service: Non-LOS, Wi-Fi sort of service, where a small antenna on a computer connects to the tower. Uses lower frequency range (2 to 11 GHz). LOS, where a fixed antenna points straight at the WiMax tower from a rooftop or pole. The LOS connection is stronger and more stable, so it is able to send a lot of data with fewer errors. Uses higher frequencies, with ranges reaching a possible 66 GHz.Through stronger LOS antennas, WiMax transmitting stations would send data to WiMax enabled computers or routers set up within 30 (3,600 square miles of coverage) mile radius.
WiMax Application
Wimax technology brings a new ingredient to today’s wireless communication, There are various benefits of Wimax technology such as it provides simple based prospective cost saving and service efficiency but to be capable to allow VoIP calling, mobile devices, video making and high speed data transfer. It use in verious field like.
Broadband connection in Developing Countries :There are many countries such as Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe are likely to achieve the most from the fixed wide area wireless networking technology. The analyst of West Technology Research Solutions the developing countries have limited cable transportation, because the expenditure to install a WiMax station in concurrence with an accessible cellular tower or yet as a private hub will be very small in contrast to developing a wired solution.Beacuse of easy installation and cost effect Many countries wanting to deploy WiMax Technology in their area.
There are several example where we can use WiMax
- Nomadic Broadband
- Private Networks
- WiMax Backhaul
- Connectivity for Small and Mediun Business
