One of the prominent Indian festivals, Raksha Bandhan holds a special significance in the Indian culture. Rakhi stands for the chaste and subtle bond of love and affection between a brother and a sister. On the day, the sisters would get up early, take bath and pray to the God for the goodwill, health and prosperity of their beloved brothers. It commemorates the strong bond shared between some of the legendary brothers and their sisters. According to the legends, Yamuna, the sister of Lord Yama (the God of Death), tied a sacred thread on his wrist. Since then, the tradition of tying sacred thread called Rakhi or Rakshabandhan is followed by sisters.

On the visit of their brothers, the sisters would prepare delicious cuisine and sweets, to satisfy their taste buds. Laddoos (sweet balls), burfi (sweetmeat) and various other delicacies are prepared on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. According to a Rakhi custom, tilak is applied on the brother's forehead and he is offered a sweet by his sister, when she ties Rakhi on his wrist. The sisters generally offer laddoo to their brothers, while performing the rituals of Rakhi. After the ritual is over, the siblings would spend time with each other. Lavish feast is also arranged by the sisters, to make the celebrations even more exciting.
