Bonsai-phone: New solar charger is built in shape of tiny tree - with panels for leaves

  • Users can turn 27 solar panel 'leaves' toward sun for faster charging
  • Charges any USB device including i Phones, other smart phones and cameras
The new Electree solar charger soaks up power via 27 solar panel 'leaves', and can charge iPhones and other portable gadgets from a battery built into its 'roots'.
The gadget, designed by French designer Vivien Muller, takes up to 36 hours to build up enough electricity to charge a phone, depending on the weather.
Users can position each solar panel to face towards the sun so the tree charges more quickly.

The £260 Electree charger uses solar panels to charge up devices such as iPhones - and will work on a windowsill
French designer Vivien Muller got his inspiration from photosynthesis - a process which gives plants energy from the sun’s light.
The amorphous silicon solar panels charge up a battery in the base, and can charge any device with a USB connector - including most digital cameras and smartphones.

Mr Muller, who lives in Metz, spent three years perfecting his creation, called the Electree. It was initially designed with a silver base, but he since scaled back to a porcelain-like white one.
He said: 'I was inspired to make the Electree after observing trees - the leaves on trees are nature’s solar panels.'

The gadget's design is based on a Japanese bonsai tree - it soaks up the sun with its solar panels, collecting energy in the battery concealed in its 'roots'
The Electree comes with a 13,500 milliampere-hour battery, which collects the energy from the solar panels.
The gadget, which costs 260 pounds, can also charge other ‘mobile’ devices including MP3 players though a USB connection.
It is designed to be kept inside, next to a window where it will get the most sunshine throughout the day.
