The human body contains one of four main blood types: A, B, AB and O.

Each blood-type also has an accompanying Rhesus or Rh factor of either positive or negative.

The most commonly found blood-type in the world is O positive while the rarest is AB negative.

From the U.S population it was determined that the percentages of blood types were as follows.

O positive ~ 38.4%
O negative ~ 7.7%

A positive ~ 32.3%
A negative ~ 6.5%

B positive ~ 9.4%
B negative ~ 1.7%

AB positive ~ 3.2%
AB negative ~ 0.7%

So what blood type do you have? Are you reasonably common like me (A+) or do you
have a more common popular blood type?

Though jury is still out on mobile radiation, it surely is a matter to deliberate upon and know about. Here are eight things that all mobile users should know about mobile radiation and how to minimise it.

Do all mobile phones emit radiations?

Yes. Radiation emitted by cellphones is measured in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR) - the amount of radio waves absorbed by the body tissue when a mobile phone is in use. It is different for different phones. SAR is the highest when a user is talking.

All leading handset makers specify the SAR value in their user manual. These figures are also available on their websites.

What is a safe SAR level?

The lower the SAR value, the better. Both the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and EU have stringent safety standards in place on cellphone radiation levels. For instance, cellphones can't be sold officially in the US if their SAR level exceeds 1.6 watts per kg (W/kg) while manufacturers in Europe must ensure that the maximum SAR level does not exceed 2W/kg.

Can a higher SAR level cause cancer?

Can't say. SAR limits are based on guidelines issued by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection which are endorsed by the World Health Organisation.

WHO classifies mobile phone radiation on the International Agency for Research on Cancer scale into "Group 2B", or possibly carcinogenic. That means that there "could be some risk" of carcinogenicity, so additional research needs to be conducted in the long-term, heavy use of mobile phones.

How to lower exposure to cellphone radiations?

Cellphones emit maximum radiation in areas where the network signal is weak. So try to use the phone outdoors, or move close to a window. Avoid lifts and basements.

Use a landline at home or in office. A wired handsfree is also safe. A Bluetooth headset too produces less radiation than a cellphone held directly to the ear.

Does India have SAR limit?

No. But the government now plans to cap SAR at 1.6 W/kg, in line with US rules.

What is the SAR of some popular handsats?

The Apple iPhone 4, at 1.17. Samsung Galaxy S2 has a SAR of 0.338, Samsung NexusS with 0.58 and BlackBerry Curve 8310 at 0.72.

Are there radiation norms for towers?

Yes. Currently, the radiation from 650,000 towers nation-wide should be less than f/200 watts per square metre. The government proposes to tighten this parameter further.

In 2008, mobile permits of all companies were amended to include self-certification of tower radiation levels to ensure compliance with WHO-endorsed guidelines. Each instance of non-compliance carries a penalty of 5 lakh.

What has been the government's response?

A government committee report submitted this year has concluded that radiation from mobile phones and towers poses serious health risks. "People chronically exposed to such radiation have reported unspecific symptoms, ranging from burning and tingling sensation in the scalp, fatigue, sleep disturbances, dizziness, ringing in the ears, headache and palpitation," the report said.

It suggested that children, adolescents and pregnant women should avoid excessive use of cellphones while people with medical implants should keep their cellphone at least 30 cm away while talking.
Health Tip of the Day - Who knew?!!!!

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The stuff dissolves adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean. The alcohol in the vodka kills mould and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on wine stains, scrub with a brush, and then blot dry.

6. Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle with vodka and spray bees or wasps to kill them.

9 Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water into a Ziploc freezer bag and freeze for a slushy, refreshing ice pack for aches, pain or black eyes.

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the sun for three days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the tincture to aches and pains.

11. To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka on your chest and back as a liniment.

12. To cure foot odour, wash your feet with vodka.

13 Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish sting.

14. Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy to remove the urushiol oil from your skin.

The health benefits of chocolate might even equal its taste. Here are five reasons to indulge in this cocoa-rich treat.

1. Chocolate makes you happy
The warm and fuzzy feeling you get after a few squares of Dairy Milk is not imagined. Chocolate contains a phyto-nutrient that causes the brain to release endorphins—a hormone that makes you happy.

2. Chocolate protects your heart
A German study found that eating 7.5 g of dark chocolate every day may cut your chance of heart attack by almost 40 percent. Participants who nibbled on chocolate daily boasted lower blood pressure and reduced rates of stroke.

3. Chocolate helps PMS
Chocolate is virtually a nutrient-powerhouse. It contains zinc, magnesium, copper and chromium, says Prevention advisor Dr Joe Kosterich. Pre-menstrual chocolate cravings are often linked to low magnesium.

4. Chocolate contains antioxidants
Tea? Red wine? Chocolate is also a great source of antioxidants. It's rich in flavanols and proanthocyanins, both of which boost 'good' HDL cholesterol levels.

5. Chocolate can help you lose weight
A good weight-loss plan should include all the foods you love—in moderation. So don’t ban chocolate from your diet! You’ll only obsess about it because you can’t have it. Instead allow yourself a little bit of chocolate when you really want it.

Did you ever wonder why onions make you cry? Slice an onion and the tears start flowing. Why does this happen? Like all other plants, onions are also made of cells; but the onion cells contain sulfur elements.

When we slice the onions, the cells break and release the sulfur vapors. Sulfur has a bad odor, and when these vapors mix with the moisture of our eyes a chemical reaction takes place which produces molecules such as ethylsufine which make your eyes burn.

The eyes then produce tears to wash and and dilute the chemicals – in other words the tears are a natural reaction of the body so that the offensive chemicals can be washed away.

As long as we keep on slicing the onions, more and more cells will break, which will produce more sulfur vapors, and hence more and more tears!

To prevent the tears, try cutting the onions in a bowl of water. The water helps dissolve the sulfur elements, so that they don’t reach your eyes and this prevents the tears from flowing!
t has been the most talked about topic that this world is going to end on Dec.21, 2012. Here, I would tell you 5 best reasons, why it will not happen:

Mayans never claimed it:

The Mayans had many calendars they used, one of which was known as the “long count” calendar, which measures very long periods of time. According to this calendar (which has been known to archeologists for decades, by the way) the Earth’s “fifth sun” would end at the Winter solstice, December 21, 2012, at which point a new, sixth 5,125-year cycle would begin. What significance this had to the Mayans is a source of some debate, but it is the general consensus that they did not attribute to it any catastrophic events. Most likely, they simply considered it a time for spiritual renewal or introspection, which doesn’t sound all that dangerous to me. The teaching that the Mayan’s believed it was the end of time, then, appears to be a largely westernized misreading (or deliberate misrepresentation) of the significance of the Mayan calendar and Mayan beliefs associated with it.

Nostradamus never picked 2012:

It has been popularly believed that Nostradamus, the famous sixteenth century French mystic, suggested the end would come in 2012, perfectly coinciding with the Mayan date, which, if true, would be very spooky indeed. However, in reading through Nostradamus’ many quatrains, nowhere does he specifically mention the year 2012 or even suggest that the end would come around that time. In fact, his predictions extend all the way to the year 3797, making it seem we have some time yet before the end is neigh. Additionally, his writings are so obscure as to make any interpretation little better than a guess. Most of them are likely referring to events that took place in his lifetime, with the rest being so vague that they can be made to fit any time frame the reader so desires.

Earth isn’t easy to destroy:

Sure, there are things that could do the planet in, but Earth is a lot hardier a place than many give it credit for. After all, it’s been here for four billion years now, had its clock repeated cleaned by asteroids and comets, endured climactic changes of biblical proportions, and even survived a collision with another planet that created our own moon, and yet it keeps on ticking. And you think a few melting ice caps and puny nuclear weapons are going to do it in? Please…

People who suggest the end is coming don’t know what they’re talking about:

Unfortunately, human beings have a tendency to invest great authority in people who can convince them they are prophecy “experts” or have some sort of hidden knowledge others do not possess that allows them to read the future. Many of these people are sincere individuals who simply misinterpret ancient bible texts, while others are deluded crazies who only want to include others in their fantasy world. A few are even unscrupulous charlatans out to make a quick buck. The bottom line is, however, that nobody really knows what the future holds regardless of who they are or what methodology they use. There simply is no evidence that anyone has ever successfully prophesied some future event (beyond some short-term political or military events easily surmised by gauging current international trends) with anything approaching clarity or accuracy.

Reversal of the magnetic poles would not be catastrophic:

It seems that every few hundred thousand years or so, the Earth’s magnetic field dwindles to practically nothing and then gradually reappears with the north and south poles flipped. Now this flipping of the magnetic poles—which appears to have last happened about 780,000 years ago—isn’t particularly dangerous, but this brief period—about a century or so in duration—of decreased magnetic fields could threaten life on the planet, for without magnetic protection, particle storms and cosmic rays from the sun, as well as even more energetic subatomic particles from deep space, would strike Earth’s atmosphere, eroding the already beleaguered ozone layer and causing all sorts of problems to both man and beast (especially among those creatures that navigate by magnetic reckoning). Further, scientists estimate that we are overdue for such an event and have also noticed that the strength of our magnetic field has decreased about 5 percent in the past century, possibly signaling that such an event may be in our immediate future—within a few centuries if not sooner. However, in being so gradual, should scientists in the future discover that such a shift is in the works, there should be plenty of time to take the necessary precautions to avoid the most destructive effects by moving underground or off planet, or perhaps strengthening the planet’s atmospheric defenses through the use of exotic, futuristic technologies. In any case, it isn’t something we need to worry about in the short term—though it could be a concern for those living a few hundred or even thousands of years from now.

Yellow is indeed an attractive and beautiful color. It's quite different from other colors as it can attract even a baby. It represents wisdom, concentration, cheerfulness, auspiciousness , optimism, energy, intellectuality, spiritual enlightenment and confidence. Though it is said to be attractive one, we will feel some difficult and get irritated with a complete yellowish atmosphere. Since it is a punching color the continuous watching of this color may sometimes causes headache and irritation on our eyes. Whenever it is combined with basic colors like red, blue and green, it will look so beautiful. The combination of red color and yellow color will be always nice. For this reason, in the park red and yellow flowers are grown near by near to attract the visitors.

The Yellow Flower

The Importance of Yellow in Hinduism

It has spiritual importance in religions like Hinduism. The people belonging to Hinuism believe that this an auspicious one and never forget to use this color whenever they start new consignments. To get this color they use the mixture of turmeric powder and little bit water. Paricularly the business people in various parts of India will apply this color on the front page of their new account note book to get more profits in that year. During the occasions like marriage the priests will mix the turmeric powder with a little quantity of water to make a small conical shaped object which represents Lord Ganesh. It is told in Hinduism that turmeric powder and water can be used to create instant Lord Ganesh to worship Him. The Hindu people will wear yellow colored dresses while they are performing religious activities. It is also a traditional habit that every bride of Hindu marriage should have worn yellow saree. In every Hindu temple in India turmeric powder will be also used along with thiruneeru, kumkum and chandan. The yellow color is also associted with the God of Jupiter. In Hinduism God of Jupiter is called as Guru Bhagavan or Guru Moorthy. Lord Guru Moorthy will always appear in the yellow colored dress in Hindu temples.

Yellow in Yoga

In spiritual science it is stated that our body is made up of seven chakras which are lying imaginarily one above another from the base of spine to the top head. The third chakra, also callled as Solar Plexus Chakra, is lying on the stomach area and it is represented by the yellow color. This chakra is known as energy center and the same will stimulate nerves in our body. Whenever a person has problem with this third chakra, he will get problems like lack of concentration, dullness and energyless feeling.

Yellow in Chromotherapy

The yellow color is widely used in chromotherapy. Naturally yellow has healing power as it can reduce mascular pain, back pain and inflammation. It can stimulate the central nervous system (brain) of our body to get more confidence and come out of unnecessary fears. It will be very useful in liver and kidney problems. The stimulant power of yellow color is used to cure diseases like chronic constipation, diabetes, eye infections, syphillis and impotence.
Our Universe is composed of millions of galaxies. Among them 'Milky Way' is the one in which our solar system exists. Our solar system is a group of celestial bodies including sun, planets, moons and asteroids. Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are the planets in our solar system and the planet Pluto has been recently kicked out from the system.

In fact, our solar system is a very very little part of Milky Way Galaxy and it is true that there are millions and millions of other solar systems also existing in our Great Galaxy. Though it can be assumed as a very small part when comparing with the size of our universe and galaxy, our solar system is still beyond our imagination and no one can easily imagine how much it is spacious . For instance, we can not easily imagine the distance between the outer most planet and sun that is around 455 crores Km.

Let us see How our Solar System was created by the Super Nature

Billions and billions of years ago each and every thing in our great universe, galaxy and energy of observable Universe had been concentrated in one point of infinite density. According to Big Bang Theory, our Universe is expanding till today from that infinite state of density and it's understood that space is expanding itself with galaxies.

Sun

Sun is the absolute center part of the solar system and it comprises about 99% of the total mass of the solar system. It is about 1.3 million times greater than our earth by volume and has a diameter of 1.39*10^6 km. This is mostly composed of Hydrogen and Helium atoms. The light and heat energy in our sun is produced by the nuclear fusion. In this phenomena two Hydrogen atoms are combining together in extreme temperature and pressure to form one Helium atom. The loss of mass in this process is converted to heat and light energy. It is really amazing that every pair of Hydrogen atoms requires millions and millions of years to get succcesfully formed as one Helium atom. This could happen only in the center part of the Sun which externds upto 25% of radius from the center since the process requires very high temperature around 1.5 crore degree celcious. Besides being the source of light and heat energy, the sun attracts all the planets in the system and makes them revolve on their respective orbits.

The Mercury

It is one which is the smallest and closest planet to the sun in the solar system. It is lying about 5 crore km away from the sun. It takes about 88 days to complete one revolution around the sun and rotates once for every 176 earth days. The surface temperature varies from −183 °C to 427 °C. It has a radius of 2439.7 km and only 5% of earth's volume. It doesn't have any moon. The average density of this planet is calculated as 5.4 gm/cc which is slightly less than that of earth. It has a large iron core and its mass is 3.3*10^23 kg.

Venus

This is revolving next to Mercury and hotter than our earth. It is about 10.8 crore km away from the Sun and takes about 225 days to complete one revolution. It has a radius of 6052 km and 85% of earth's volume. Mean density of this planet is 5.204 gm/cc with a mass of 4.868*10^24 kg. This planet also has no moons. It can be seen through naked eyes from our earth in east direction around early morning hours.

Earth

This is our home planet and entirely different from other planets with its snow covered high mountain ranges, great oceans, dense forests, large rivers, woderful waterfalls and countless living being including human beings. Its optimum temperature, atmospheric conditions and availability of water permits the growth and existence of living beings. It is about 14 core km away from the sun and has a radius of 6400 km. Earth's mean density is 5.5 gm/cc and mass of 5.9*10^24 kg. It takes 365 days to complete one orbit and has only one moon. Its iron core makes it as the densest planet of the solar system. Our earth rotates itself once in every 24 hours.

Moon

Our Earth has only one natural satellite called Moon and it is about one third by the volume of our home planet earth. With its low mean density (3.34 gm/cc) its mass is only 7.347*10^22 kg which is just 1.2% of our total earth's mass. It is lying at about 3.84 lac km away from the earth and has a radius of 1,737 km. It is revolving round the earth once for every 30 earth days.

Mars

Mars is lying between our earth and Jupiter. It is about 22.5 crore km away from the sun and takes 686 days to complete one revolution around the sun . It has a radius of 3,396 km and only 15% of earth's volume. It has a mean density of 3.394 gm/cc with a mass of 6.41*10^23 kg. It is also called as red planet because of reddish appearance due to the presence of Iron-oxide on its surface.

Jupiter

This is the largest planet of the solar system which lies between the Mars and Saturn. It lies at about 77.8 crore km away from the sun and takes about 11.86 years to complete an orbit and rotates once for every 10 hours.. It has a great radius of 66,854 km and is about 1,300 times greater than our earth by volume. Its mean density is 1.32 gm/cc which is relatively lower than earth but, has a great mass of 1.898*10^27 kg. The planet surface has been covered by 50 km deep layer consisting mixture of gases like Hydrogen, Helium, Ammonia, Nitrogen and etc., About 63 moons are revolving around this giant planet. Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are important ones and among them Ganymede is larger than the planet Mercury. The Great Red Spot is the special feature this planet which lies at 22 degree to the south of equator. That was formed by the anti-cyclonic storm which have to be held there since 1665 AD. The Great Red Spot is so large that 2 or 3 earths can be filled in.

Saturn

This is the second largest and sixth planet of the system which lies at about 140 crore km away from the Sun. It takes about 29.5 years to complete one revolution around sun and rotates itself for every 10.5 hours. It has a great radius of 60,268 km. With very low mean density of 0.687 gm/cc its mass is calculated as 5.7 *10^26 kg. It's about 763 times larger than earth by volume. It has special feature of rings that appear around 65,000 to 1.25 lac km away from the planet. It's said that the rings are the result of disintegrated moon which might have been struck by asteroids or comets. The Saturn has 61 moons. Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys and Titan are some of its moons and of which Titan is 1.5 times greater than our Earth's moon.

Uranus

Uranus is the third largest planet of the solar system. It is also the coldest one and lying at about 300 crore km from the sun and completes its orbit for every 84 earth years and rotates once in 17.5 hours. It has a radius of 25,000 km and about 63 times greater than the earth by volume. The mean density of the planet is 1.27 gm/cc and mass is 8.7*10^25 kg. In fact, this is the coldest planet with icy temperature of - 224 degree centigrade. It has 27 moons. It is said that icy wind reaching the speed of 900 km/hour is blowing over this planet.

Neptune

This is the farthest planet of the solar system and lies at a distance of 455 crore km from the Sun and takes about 165 years to complete one revolution around the sun and rotates itself once for 16 hours. It is the fourth largest by volume and third largest by mass in the solar system. It has a radius of 24,340 km and 58 times greater than by volume. It has a mean density of 1.638 gm/cc and a mass of 1.0243'10^26 kg. There are 13 moons to this planet. Naiad, Thalassa, Despina and Galatea are some important ones.

Pluto

This is lying at about 445 crore km away from the Sun. Though it had been the farthest one in the solar system, it became closer to the Sun than Neptune, the fact was discovered in Feb. 1999. It completes its orbit for every 248 years and rotates itself once for every 6 days and 9 hours. It has a radius of 1,151 km and only 18% of earth's volume. Its mean density is 2.03 gm/cc and mass is 0.007*10^22 kg (only 2% of earth's mass). It has three natural satellites namely Charon, Nix and Hydra.

The United Kingdom (UK) is often incorrectly referred to as England, Britain, or Great Britain. In fact, the UK is the union of four constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The name United Kingdom is short for: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain refers to one of the two major islands that comprise the British Isles; it is made up of England, Scotland, and Wales.
Some people likely confuse England as being the same as the whole of Great Britain or the United Kingdom because of England's dominance and power in Great Britain and the UK. As the largest part of the UK, England holds about 84% of the population of the entire United Kingdom and geographically covers approximately 57% of Great Britain. Moreover, London, as England's capital and the largest city in the UK, has been the ruling center of government for the United Kingdom since 1707. In 1999, however, Scotland and Wales were granted some self governing powers, and the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly of Wales now has some ruling power.
It is also easy to confuse the term "British" as meaning the same as "English." "British" correctly refers to any people from Great Britain and not only the "English" from England. For the most part, people from England, Scotland, and Wales, prefer to be referred to as "English," "Scottish," and "Welsh" respectively, as opposed to the more generic "British" term.

KOCHI: Vagaries of monsoon have upset the life pattern of a large number of migratory birds.

While a few species chose to arrive early in Kerala this year, some others delayed the annual visit by a few months due to the extended showers. It was the wetland-dependent migrants that came late by nearly two months whereas the forest birds reached their favourite spots well in advance.

The migratory species have evolved a voyage pattern for themselves wherein they reach the wetlands and forest regions of the State by September and return to their native grounds by April. They complete a crucial phase of their lives in the water bodies and forests of Kerala.

The international migrants come all the way from places like Siberia whereas some other migrants reach here from the northern regions of the Himalayas. Some feathered friends come from Europe when life becomes difficult in the intense winter months there. The arrival of commensal migrants, which are found near human habitations, like Ashy drongo, Golden oriole and Greenish leaf-warbler was also delayed this year, said P.O. Nameer, State coordinator of the Indian Bird Conservation Network and Important Bird Area Programme.

Most of the migratory species that used to reach the kol wetlands, Peechi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kerala Agricultural University campus, Mannuthy, by September came nearly two months late. The delayed arrival was striking as the water birds came in large congregations, Dr. Nameer said.

One of the reasons for the delayed appearance can be the excess monsoon the State received this year. It is to be seen whether the birds will overstay the migratory season. The birds go back when the breeding instincts urge them to hit the return path, he said.

The delayed arrival of birds was conspicuous in the wetlands of Kottayam district also, said Dr. B. Sreekumar, president of the Kottayam Nature Society.

“Kumarakom, Veeyapuram, Mangottuchira, Aayaaparambu, Karuvatta and Polachery are some of the favourite spots of migrant species in the district. Lesser whistling ducks and Egrets are among those who came late. Though delayed, a few species have started arriving in good numbers at Thollayiram Kayal and some other areas of the district,” he said.

Good monsoon in neighbouring States means less appearance of the migrant birds species in Kerala. A drought in Tamil Nadu four years back had brought more birds to Kerala, he said.

Early arrival

Contrary to the delayed presence of wetland birds, the forest species chose to arrive well in advance at the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekad. Some species like Warblers and Wagtails reached the sanctuary as early as September as against October, said R. Sugathan, ornithologist associated with the sanctuary.

Last year, the birds kept the date. They came and departed on time, he said.

Earlier studies have recorded the presence of more than 100 migratory birds in the sanctuary.

The excess rains could be one of the deciding factors as it might have ensured availability and supply of food for the birds. The changing patterns of flowering and fruiting of trees due to global warming would also have telling effect on the lives of several bird species, Dr. Sugathan said.
